For the first time, a mainland Chinese company has defaulted on its bonds. SunTech Power Holdings has been clinging on by its teeth but after failing to repay $541mm of notes due on March 15th - and following four consecutive quarters of losses through the first quarter of 2012 and since then having failed to report quarterly earnings - owed to Chinese domestic lenders, the firm is restructuring. As Bloomberg reports, Chinese solar companies are struggling after taking on debt to expand supply, leading to a glut that forced down prices and squeezed profits - and most notably were unable to renegotiate its liabilities and obtain “additional flexibility” from creditors. This is highly unusual and perhaps is the beginning of a trend for Chinese firms. We already know the little discussed but gargantuan size of China's corporate bond market (which dwarves the US relative to GDP) as the mis-allocated credit tsunami of the last few years begins to hit its lending limit - just as Chinese corporate leverage is surging. If Suntech, the world’s largest solar-panel maker as recently as 2011, could not renegotiate its loans, we humbly suggest there are more problem firms out there about to find their friendly local banker a little less enthusiastic - just as Marc Faber warned recently.
As a rule, speculative bubbles pop and revert to their pre-bubble levels, so we can anticipate the eventual popping of all remaining housing bubbles.

Bill Gross, oprichter en fondsbeheerder bij PIMCO, is niet te spreken over de monetaire strategie van de Federal Reserve. De Fed zal in de komende 12 maanden voor meer dan 1000 miljard dollar aan cheques uitschrijven. De Europese centrale bank zal ongeveer hetzelfde bedrag in het systeem pompen.
Die injecties zijn bedoeld om de economische groei aan te zwengelen, maar zullen waarschijnlijk hun doel voorbijschieten. De centrale banken blazen volgens Gross hoofdzakelijk ZEEPBELLEN, maar kunnen helaas de groei niet stimuleren. Hun ingrijpen dreigt dus een slag in het water te worden.
Na het uit elkaar klappen van de huizenprijzen ZEEPBELLEN in de VS, Engeland, Spanje, Portugal, maar ook huizenmarkt zeepbel in Nederland (en dan vergeet ik er nog wel een paar), zijn er nog steeds ZEEPBELLEN te vinden in de wereld. Vandaag kijk ik naar één van de grootste huizenmarkt zeepbel; namelijk die in Australië.

Maak het toezicht op de banken Europees, in plaats van nationaal. Dat wil de Europese Commissie. Een uitstekend plan, maar er zit wel een addertje onder het gras.
Wat is de kern van de eurocrisis? Liegende Grieken? Te hoge begrotingstekorten? Leeglopende ZEEPBELLEN op de huizenmarkt? Te hoge lonen in Zuid-Europa? Dat speelt allemaal mee. Maar de kern van de crisis zijn de Europese banken. Daar begon de ellende en daar zal het met een beetje pech ook eindigen.
