De grafiek geeft het Amerikaanse GDP per persoon weer, maar dan uitgedrukt in troy ounces goud tegen de goudprijs van dat moment. De grafiek gaat terug tot 1791 en laat zien dat we vanaf een top in het jaar 2000 hard afglijden naar de niveaus van 1980 (ook een zwaar crisisjaar) en de Grote Depressie van begin jaren 30.
