Op 17 december schaftte de SBV die rente af nadat de Amerikaanse Fed de rente verhoogde. Gouverneur Nguyen Van Binh geeft nu aan dat meer maatregelen op de planning staan. Hij zei dat de maatregelen die worden genomen met de Amerikaanse dollar vergelijkbaar zullen zijn met wat de centrale bank eerder heeft gedaan om haar inwoners te ontmoedigen om goud aan te houden.

“People used to be able to enjoy an interest rate for their gold savings, but they currently have to pay fees to keep their precious metal at credit institutions. We may do the same with savings in dollars in the coming time. We do not rule out the possibility that a negative interest rate will be applied to both of the deposits”
