One day in the near future Americans will finally realize that their money is being devalued at a rapid pace. Official figures showed Wednesday that the total debt of the 17 countries that use the single currency at the end of the second quarter was worth 90 per cent of the value of the group’s economy — the highest level since the euro was launched in 1999.

The rise from the previous quarter’s 88.2 per cent and the previous year’s equivalent of 87.1 per cent, as reported by Eurostat, the EU’s statistics office, is a result of the eurozone’s economic problems — which are making it harder for countries to handle their debts.

“The euro area economy remains stuck in a rut,” said James Ashley, senior European economist at RBC Capital Markets.

(The deficit was 4.77% for the first 8 months.) The rub is whether Spain will be able to cut enough to obtain  EU support (probably) and whether there will be an eventual haircut for current debtholders (probably). Catalonia, Valencia and other regions will probably need $20B of aid, the sen. debtholders of the weak banks will be forced to take losses, and there might be some sharing of losses among all banks. An estimated decline in GDP of 1.7% (per the Economy Ministry), the IIF's recent estimate of addl bank loan losses up to EUR260B, and depositor flight hurt. From 2008 to 2011, Spain's debt jumped from EUR436B to EUR735B while its GDP declined from EUR1.09T to EUR1.07T.

De gemiddelde prijs van zilver van vorig jaar (2011) is maar liefst met 74% gestegen ten opzichte van de gemiddelde zilverprijs uit 2010. Dat is een record voor het witte edelmetaal.

De prijsstijging is mede tot stand gekomen door de enorme vraag vanuit de industrie, alsmede door de alsmaar groeiende vraag van beleggers.

Zilver deed het met 74% zeker niet slecht, kijkend naar de andere edelmetalen: Palladium: + 39%; Goud: + 28% en tot slot presteerde Platina in absolute zin niet slecht met + 7%, maar relatief gezien ten opzichte van de andere edelmetalen bleef Platina dramatisch achter, zelfs zo erg dat Platina inmiddels $190 goedkoper is dan Goud - en dit is historisch!

(Washington, D.C. – January 4, 2012) – The average annual silver price for 2011 of $35.12 per ounce set a record for the white metal,  a staggering 74% gain over the 2010 average annual price of $20.19 per ounce.

“Silver’s strong price performance last year owed much to the strength in investment demand, as well as growth in industrial demand, much of which is relatively price insensitive in the short-term,” stated Michael DiRienzo, Executive Director of the Silver Institute.

Silver outperformed all precious metals in terms of INCREASES of average annual prices:  Palladium posted a 39% gain in 2011, while gold was up 28% and platinum rose 7% last year over 2010’s figures.
