Bitcoin Will Hit $5,000 This Month

If you haven’t been paying attention, Bitcoin has been on a rocket ship ever since its August 1st hard fork. It has hit its own all-time high nearly every day this month and its market cap sits right near PayPal (PYPL), Adobe (ADBE), and Netflix (NFLX) right now (near $70 billion).

At the time of writing, one Bitcoin has eclipsed $4,000 in value, up from the $2,200 point it sat at in July as the world awaited to see how miners would decide its future on August 1st. Here’s a timeline of the August 1st hard fork; which created the new Bitcoin Cash (itself the 4th most valued cryptocurrency now) and also produced “segwit” for Bitcoin; an ADDITIONAL layer of functionality for the currency. Segwit stands for segregated witness and has finished phase one of its implementation with phase two happening August 18th. All signs are positive on this front.

Russia and China have today signed a co-operation agreement that will see the delivery of Russian natural gas to China. The gas will be transported to China through the so-called 'eastern route' as part of a 40-year agreement that will see ADDITIONAL co-operation in the engineering, construction and operation of gas pipeline infrastructure.

Meanwhile Russian energy giant Gazprom and China's CNPC have begun consultations on natural gas deliveries via the 'western route' to China. The talks are at the centre of a meeting between the Russian and Chinese prime ministers which will see 40 deals signed between the two countries.

For the first time, a mainland Chinese company has defaulted on its bonds. SunTech Power Holdings has been clinging on by its teeth but after failing to repay $541mm of notes due on March 15th - and following four consecutive quarters of losses through the first quarter of 2012 and since then having failed to report quarterly earnings - owed to Chinese domestic lenders, the firm is restructuring. As Bloomberg reports, Chinese solar companies are struggling after taking on debt to expand supply, leading to a glut that forced down prices and squeezed profits - and most notably were unable to renegotiate its liabilities and obtain “ADDITIONAL flexibility” from creditors. This is highly unusual and perhaps is the beginning of a trend for Chinese firms. We already know the little discussed but gargantuan size of China's corporate bond market (which dwarves the US relative to GDP) as the mis-allocated credit tsunami of the last few years begins to hit its lending limit - just as Chinese corporate leverage is surging. If Suntech, the world’s largest solar-panel maker as recently as 2011, could not renegotiate its loans, we humbly suggest there are more problem firms out there about to find their friendly local banker a little less enthusiastic - just as Marc Faber warned recently.

The raging second Egyptian Spring isn't quite the webcast ratings bonanza it was when it first struck in 2011, which makes sense as the current Muslim Brotherhood government has the full backing of the US and thus it is in "everyone's best interest" to not follow how close to a counterrevolution the nation once again is. And while for the time being the country's most valuable asset, the Egypt-controlled Suez Canal Authority is in "stable" hands, that does not mean that the government, which today announced its foreign reserves had dipped precariously to only $13.6 billion, can't enforce inflation where everyone else says deflation reigns. As a result, as of May 1, the tolls for any crude oil and other liquid tankers will rise by 5%, while tolls for other commodities will increase by 2-3%. Expect said ADDITIONAL infrastructure costs to be promptly passed on to end consumers around the globe.
