The vicious cycle of rising borrowing costs and continued economic recession prompted the International Monetary Fund earlier this week to predict that the downturn will last into next year. "This government can't decide between a good and a bad choice," Mr. Rajoy said. "This government has to choose between the bad and the even worse."

Met een schuldenberg van 5,3 miljard euro staat Sicilië aan de rand van de afgrond. De Italiaanse pREMier Mario Monti heeft de gouverneur van de regio, Raffaele Lombardo, wanbeleid verweten en hem gevraagd op te stappen. Duitse politici willen Duitsers die deze zomer nog op vakantie gaan naar Griekenland een soort subsidie geven. Volgens bondslid Erwin Lotter (FDP) zou het erg zinvol zijn om Duitse burgers met pREMie op vakantie te sturen. Op die manier zouden de Duitse burgers die weinig geld hebben om op vakantie te gaan geholpen zijn, alsmede het Griekse toerisme, dat wel een flinke steun in de rug kan gebruiken.

What it shows is the now extREMe flight of foreign capital from Spain and Italy. As you can see, the graph only goes up to the end of January, but we know that the phenomenon has got, much, much worse since then. This Credit Suisse graphic (below) tells much the same story. Anyone who can has been getting their money out. Likewise, any foreign company doing business in Spain and Italy REMoves the money as soon as they get paid, driven both by concern over the safety of the domestic banking system and the possibility that these countries might end up leaving the euro. This has been pretty much one way traffic.

In ruil voor de €100 miljard die Spanje als steun van Europa ontvangt, zal het land wel de nodige concessies moeten doen. Woensdag 11 juli kondigde pREMier Rajoy nog aan dat er voor €65 miljard aan nieuwe bezuinigingsmaatregelen zullen worden doorgevoerd. Zaterdag werd echter bekend dat de hervormingen die Spanje heeft aangekondigd in de komende twee en een half jaar €56.4 miljard moeten gaan opleveren.
